That post about Chloe Bailey not being as “bad” as she wants us to think she is really highlights something about being a Black woman in music these days that I’ve been bitching about for years. I thought it when lil sis was first talking about wanting to show her more sexual side and everyone got all up in arms then. Which is the “why?”

Even more so, why did Chloe feel the need to announce it to the world that she wanted to be more sexual? Most women if that’s what they want to do, they just do it. Beyoncé never had a moment where she was like “I wanna be very sexual.” The at most Rihanna her girl gone gone bad era but she was doing sexy lite from her debut. Britney was always selling sex even as a teen. Even Miley didn’t announce that she was gonna be going all “sexy” and try to twerk her nonexistent ass on stage; she did it and then addressed the controversy when ppl flipped.

It was just weird…

And I think it shows that this isn’t about expressing herself the way she claims it is. She understood that to succeed, especially without her sister, she would need to sell sex. And sell it more explicitly than the young, newly sexual ingenue way that would be more appropriate for her age. Beyoncé was in her thirties talking about rolling up the partition; Chloe trynna do that when she was barely 21.

It’s an act. She sees the hypersexual baddies with their long coffin nails and long straight haired weaves and tight fitting outfits and knows she’s gotta do THAT to get attention. But she’s built her career on being cute and child friendly and that’s what we’ve know her as. And slowly transitioning to a mature sexy would take too long, and it’s also not what sells. So she wanted to do this and didn’t want to deal with the heat (comme Miley), so she hoped her warning would be just that.

But it makes everything she does tired. I looked up her numbers and that song with Chris brown didn’t really chart. Especially not as well as Mercy. Her single with future also isn’t moving on the charts. Like those niggas is old and not HER. The music she trynna do ain’t HER. The persona she wants to take on like she can keep up with Doja and Saweetie ain’t HER. And no one is buying it.

I just think that she would have been such an amazing black college girl image in music. More down to earth and NORMAL. But no she wanna keep up with them sooooooooo…here we are. Disappointed, unimpressed, not fooled, and tired. Another cog in the machine. Nothing new.

GOD AND THE MUG. THE MUG WAS SUCH A SMALL GOOD CHOICE.

Vanders hand wraps around that tankard like it owe's him money smmnmdsnd whereas Huck would probably need to use two hands to do the same.

It's such a fantastic way of getting across the Vibes of the characters in a nonverbal way. giving the animators my bank info as we speak.

I. GRMGKRKGR. The way they re-introduce Huck makes my brain start bounding off my skull

First he's fully covered by the cloak, he looks relatively normal

then he falls backwards, revealing that he's completely emaciated, far past his previous thinness.

THEN we get the close-up shot to show the tumor, giving us a glimpse into just how damaging shimmer has been on his body - his hood even falls off to give us a full look.

I JUST. GOD. The escalation. Those small moments of Tension-Release are scattered all throughout Arcane and they all give me such massive brainworms.

LIKE EVEN FOR PPL WHO MIGHT NOT REMEMBER HIM,, ITS JUST SUCH A GOOD WAY OF REVEALING THOSE DETAILS.

and for the people who DO remember him it adds that little layer of,,,, Youch

AND THAT ANGLE. GOD. It really feels like we're looking down at him from the barrel of Cait's gun. The cinematography in this show is always so pretty.

My absolute favorite detail they added was post-timeskip Huck's,, self-soothing behaviors?

He holds his own hand, he leans against his arm - at one point he tries to rub his forehead before flinching back, forgetting his tumor is there AAAA </33333

It's so clear he isn't accustomed to contact, which makes Cait's hug feel so much more cathartic </3

HE JUST <33333. They really emphasize how vulnerable he is. His constant fear and his desperation to not be afraid is such a key part of his character.

Like he says himself that one of the main reasons he turned to shimmer was to finally, finally make other people the ones who are afraid I JUST. AAA. I FUCKING LOVE THIS GUY YALL IDK WHAT TO SAY.

Chapter 2: I follow every little whiff

You gave yourself a day off that week. Rather, the desolation of Birch allowed you an excuse to get away from your desk. An internet outage across the town had you up and wandering the main road just after noon. Your grandmother refused to join you so she was left to her true crime novel and the weekday droning of talk show hosts.

After a peek in the book shop where you picked out some used thrillers for your nan and a guilty splurge on one of Babs' pies to add to the surprise, you stopped by the diner and had some soup to warm up from the unrelenting cold. You played around on your phone as you blindly slurped from your spoon. With no available connection, you swapped candies to achieve a score high enough to get to the next round.

After another loss, you put your screen down and added some pepper to the tomato soup. You leaned your chin in your hand and peered across the road. The Asp was just diagonal from The Chipped Saucer and from your seat by the window you could see the comings and goings of the dingy bar.

You chuckled to yourself as you remembered the hundreds of comments on your video. You weren't entirely surprised that the internet cheered at the sight of a woman beating up a man in broad daylight, you'd seen much worse on the web. But many were curious and asked about how it started and about the small town alluded to in the caption.

You picked up your phone and flipped open the camera. You pointed it through the glass as one of the many bikers strutted out of the bar and down the street. You knew him, like most in town, he was the leader's right hand man. Steve Rogers. He had an odd gait, rigid with long strides, and you remember Kelly used to make fun of him when you walked home from school. That felt like forever ago.

You ended the video and dropped your phone again. You'd send it to Kelly when the outage was over. It would be a good laugh. Plus, you hadn't heard from her much since she moved to the city.

You finished your soup and paid. You went out into the street and cut around to the backstreets. You made your way back to your nans and found Pippin scratching at the front door. You stopped and scooped him up before you let yourself in.

"Don't like the snow, do ya?" You set him down and he whipped his tail before skittering off, "hey nan, I got you some stuff."

"You spend too much," she grumbled as you hung your coat and grabbed her treats.

"Only on you," you sang as you entered the front room, "sugarless blueberry pie, your fave, and some books about murder and all that freaky stuff you love."

"Hmm," she watched you put the pie and books down on the coffee table, "suppose the pie will go good with tea."

"Ah, and I suppose I'll be making that tea?" You returned.

"My arthritis…" she pouted but her grin came through.

"Yeah, yeah," you snickered as you went to the kitchen to put on the kettle, "we going black today or something lighter?"

"Put on some of the pekoe," she called back, "make a whole pot."

"Will do, ma'am," you trilled and basked in her annoyed mutter.

When the internet came back, you sent of an email to inform the agency of the interruption and promised to meet your deadlines. Then you puttered around and added a caption to the video before you sent it off to Kelly; 'why he walk like that tho'. She sent a series of crying emojis back and told you to post it.

'Nah, it's a dumb joke.' You typed back.

'Saw ur last vid, ppl will eat it up,' she insisted.

'Well, got nothing else to put up. The account’s dying since no one cares about my writing.'

'DO IT.' Her words sealed your resolve and you uploaded the video with some dramatic music in the background.

The response was almost instantaneous. Several comments saying they were happy to see more and others being for another video. 'We all wanna see inside this fucked up town' one added and several latched on. Ignoring the questions of where this was, you gave a thin promise of future small town thug content. 

You turned back to your work email and opened up your draft for your next gig. You couldn't help but smile as you went over your work. You might have just found your niche.

You knew your nan would lose it if she knew you were snooping around the club, so you didn’t tell her. You went down, made her breakfast, went back upstairs to do your work, then tiptoed out in the late afternoon to poke around town for something to upload. Birch was so dull when you lived there but to those outside, it was a novelty you were all too eager to provide.

You got more videos of the bikers; some revving their bikes, others arguing, but there was nothing overly usable. You were getting bored of it until the man himself walked out of the bar. You record the man’s glower expression as he marched down the sidewalk and turned off just down the way.

‘His name is Bucket… wtf?!’ you keyed in and snorted as you waited for it to load to your account.

Still, there was nothing special going on, like always in Birch, and your grandmother was bound to get suspicious if you kept sneaking around. You went back and hid your phone before she could bitch about it. You cooked her dinner and sat with her as your thoughts swung between work and your TikTok.

You went to bed but couldn’t sleep. You ended up watching YouTube on your phone as the windows shook with the night winds. It wasn’t until the darkness began to glow that you were roused from the cocoon of your comforter. You looked out and saw smoke coming from the main road.

You didn’t think before you pulled on your jeans and shoved your feet into your slipper, unconcerned about them soaking through as you barreled down the stairs, the sleeves of your hoodie only half on. The back door bounced behind you and you crunched down into the snow and clamored past the row of lifeless houses. 

You were out of breath as you got to the end of the path and rounded the diner to gape over at the burning garage. You got closer as the line of bikers stood in their leather with breath puffing before them in the frigid night. You stepped back into the shadow of the brick façade of the realty office and swiped your camera open.

Your hands shook and you struggled to steady the image on the screen as the mechanic woman raged in only her tee shirt. You didn’t quite understand what was going on; only that her garage was up in smoke and then men were doing nothing to smother it. She swung at the dark haired man and spat at several others; “cowards”... “fuck all of you!”

You gulped and held your breath as she was dragged away by the large redheaded henchman of the slender outsider. She fought for a moment before she was flung over his shoulder and the biker followed their leader back to The Asp. You sidled in between the building and hid until the voices faded into the wind.

Well, that would be a hell of a video. It might even go viral.

Your phone did not stop. You almost felt bad as you saw the screen limn the edges of your cell as you left it face down on the little table beside the couch. Your nan sat in her rocking chair talking away on her corded phone to Linette from down the road. You suspected that every other person in town was gossiping about the same thing; the fire.

You finished your coffee and rubbed your eyes as you checked the time and ignored the pulsing notifications. It was too much to keep up with.

Your grandmother hung up and sighed, “can’t believe it. You hear?”

“Hear what?” you pretended ignorance.

“That old garage burned down. The one with the lady,” she said, “pity. When I was a girl, that place was a salon. Ma used to take us there to get our hair cut. The barber would give us wrapped candies and pretend to cut himself with his scissors.”

“Oh? It burned down?” you weren’t sure you were very convincing but you also could just say you saw it happen.

“Yep, no one really can say. You know, maybe she was welding or some rag caught, but I bet my money on those bikers,” she sneered.

“Good thing you’re poor,” you kidded, “and why the bikers?”

“Oh, well, you know Kimmy, Linette’s girl, works down at the diner and she saw that mechanic arguing with one of those strangers, the ones dealing with the club men. Well, it’s no coincidence that trouble follows those leather jackets around,” she rocked as she nodded knowingly, “oh, one of the boys I knew back in the day, he was found burnt up with his bike. They said the tank blew… well, I saw it and that tank was pristine.”

“Nan,” you gasped, “you… Jesus.”

“Well, things don’t change in Birch, we just get older,” she continued, “when you’re young, everything seems new but then you age and it’s all just the same.”

“Wow, how… inspiring,” you said dryly.

“Girlie, you gotta be careful,” she intoned, “that fire, that’s a lesson to all the women in this town. To everyone. You don’t cross the Commandos.”

“I don’t think anyone--”

“That’s another thing, there has never been a shortage of stupid people, not now not then,” she girded, “those women who get tied up in that club, their lives are already done.”

You frowned and hid your phone in your pocket as you stood. You rubbed your neck and picked up your empty mug, “I should get started.”

“Mmm,” she said as she dialed the phone again, “I wonder if Fran knows yet.”

You were being really fucking stupid but peer pressure was not a logical thing. Even through a screen, you found it hard to resist the goads. So there you were, your phone in your hand as you live-streamed your walk down to The Asp. The data costs alone would make you regret it but you were caught up in the hype of you fifteen second of internet fame.

“Alright,” you stopped across the street and gave a view of the moniker with Cleopatra sultrily looking down at you, “this is it… I just gotta play it cool…” you turned the lens towards you and smiled nervously, “hopefully that dude at the front doesn’t stop me.”

Comments flicked up the bottom of the screen so fast and smilies and hearts floated up the side around your face. You crossed the screen as you turned your phone against your coat and approached the bar door. The large biker butted out his smoke and you bared your teeth nervously. He didn’t stop you as he rolled his shoulders and coughed.

You entered to the noise of classic rock and low voices, the clink of glasses and tap of chalk on marble. You glanced around and quickly swept your phone around to give a view of the patrons. You hurried over to the bar and climbed up on a stool.

“You need a drink?” the woman behind the bar scowled. She looked worn out even with her lips painted bright pink and her eyes clouded with blue shadow.

“Uh, sure, can I… can I get one pint of everything you have on tap?” you asked as you set your phone down and shrugged out of your coat. You draped it over the next stool and reposition your phone as you flipped the cam and used the built in stand on the case to angle yourself onto the screen.

“Sure,” she narrowed her eyes and glanced past you.

You swung your feet as you waited for her to pour the five pints; some with too much foam and the others with no head at all. You took the first and held it up for the camera.

“A classic, BudLight,” you held it up to the light, “no head and…” you sipped, “flat.” You plunked it down and coughed as you grabbed the next, “this is a raddler?” you looked at the tap for confirmation, “grapefruit… smells like piss…” you had a sip, “tastes like it too.”

You chuckled to yourself and asked for a water. You made a show of swishing it around in your mouth before you moved onto the third beer.

“Had to cleanse the palate,” you joked, “now… lots of foam on this one, dark. You know, I’m pretty surprised they have Guinness here but let’s see…” you tasted it and crinkled your nose, “that’s it. Exactly like toilet water!”

You read some of the comments telling you to check the bottles for bugs and laughed. Suddenly you were yanked off the stool by the back of your shirt and your phone was swiped up by another man as the first restrained you. You struggled against his thick arm as it hooked around your neck and the leader of their crew stared at the screen of your cell.

“What the fuck are you doing?” he snarled as he hit the screen with his thumb but the stream kept going. He dropped the phone to the floor and stomped it instead.

“This is the bitch posting about us online,” the man at your back growled. It was Steve, the one with the weird walk.

“I doubt either of you know how to use a computer,” you scoffed, “hey, let me go.”

“And why would we do that when you’re snitching to the whole world, sweetheart?” Bucky kicked your phone away as he crossed his arms.

“Actually, I’m--” you grasped Steve’s arm as it threatened to get tighter, “--promoting your trash business. I was just having a tasting, if you had just asked--”

“Shut up!” Bucky stepped closer and brought your legs up and stopped him as you planted your feet against his stomach.

“Hey,” a woman’s voice came from behind the bar as the waitress shoved aside her empty tray, “hey, she’s just a kid.”

“Bullshit,” Bucky huffed, “she looks full-grown to me.”

“So what are you gonna do?” she said, “she’s young. You can’t--”

“Don’t tell me what I can’t do,” he snapped.

“She’s right,” another voice intoned and that man, Sam, came up beside them with a pool cue in hand, “she’s just goofing around.”

“She’s a rat,” Steve insisted.

“You’re being dramatic. It’s called a meme and you do walk a little strange,” he chuckled, “no one’s gonna follow her breadcrumbs back to this shithole anyway.”

Bucky considered Sam and then looked at Steve. He poked his cheek with his tongue and sucked his teeth.

“So… you vouching for her?” Bucky asked.

“She won’t cause any more trouble, promise,” Sam said, “I’ll make sure of it.”

“You better,” Bucky snapped his fingers and you were released, “get her out of here.”

 Edward knows he technically shouldn’t, but he’s bored at work and for once, the kids are actually quietly doing their own thing. He decides against his better judgement to open Facebook and scroll aimlessly for a moment or two, while time goes on.  He quickly notices a red little number up on the top right corner to signal that he has one unopened conversation and for a moment, he wonders which of his friends would have messaged him. There hadn’t really been any ongoing chats at the moment, so he’s pleasantly surprised and looking forward to hearing from his friends.

 He’s only a little disappointed when he sees that it’s not from any of his friends, but instead from a guy he’d met just last Friday in the most strangest of ways. (His friend had hosted a garage sale and had asked for help. Edward had gone. He’d brought along some of his own stuff. This one man – Charles – had bought his old wooden shoe rack. Charles had chatted Edward up. They’d exchanged contact information and had more or less chatted since then. It was a strange way to meet someone – but, not the strangest.)

 Charles is – cute and they had a pleasant chat. Edward certainly hadn’t minded the attention, even if it had come from out of nowhere. He’d been looking forward to meeting up with him again, but as the days had gone on and their conversations had progressed, he’d found himself slowly losing a bit of interest over Charles’ over-eagerness.

 There were just so many times Charles could say he thought Edward was attractive in an hour before it got redundant and annoying.

 Edward was flattered Charles was interested in him, but Edward didn’t want to rush this either. He’d just gotten out of a serious relationship and with the end of the school year looming close, he had other things to deal with. Once summer break arrived, he would have more time and more energy. In the meantime, however, he didn’t need this stranger he barely knew to wax poetics and tell him he wished to wake up beside him to see how he woke up – or whatever garbage he’d been told. Edward was willing to give this a go, but he wasn’t looking to settle down and get married with Charles after knowing him for three days and it quite honestly felt as though Charles had already booked their venue at times.

 He was – over the top and intense. Edward had appreciated the fact that Charles had told him he’d found him attractive when he’d first seen him and he liked that he had actually returned to chat him up. It had been a little weird when Charles had called him his beloved and stranger still when he’d apologised from taking up his time and keeping him away from his friends when they’d talked that first time, but Edward had let it slide and had almost found it charming – in its own bizarre way.

 Now, it feels as though Charles is trying too hard, when really he doesn’t have to. Edward thought he was attractive, had even told him so and was more than willing to see where this would lead. but if However, if Charles doesn’t slow down, Edward will back out and move on. (Which reminds him – there’d been that whole other conversation where Charles had told him that he looked forward to living their lives together and that he didn’t want to lose him. To which Edward had politely told him that it would be best to get to know each other first.)

 Edward wants some fun – not some intense long-term lovey-dovey besotted nonsense. At least – not after three days of talking with the man.

 Still, he opens the conversation, curiosity, and boredom getting the best of him, and at first, it’s nice, until Charles asks him if he could have a photo. Edward lets out a long-suffering sigh and is glad his students are too busy with their work to notice.

 Charles has asked to send him a photo right now, of all things.

 Edward is so not in the mood for any of this.

 “No. I’m in class teaching. My students are taking a test.” He writes out. He doesn’t care if he comes across as annoyed, but this man is being irksome in his own infatuated way and it’s – pathetic. He likes the attention, to a degree, he enjoys feeling wanted, but Charles needs to calm down his ardours.

 He leaves it at that and doesn’t bother with Charles for the rest of the day.

 By the time Edward’s done, he heads to his car and figures he’ll check again to see if he’s gotten a new message. There is still part of him that is curious about this whole ordeal and so he’s a little bit pleased when he sees that Charles has sent him a few messages after their last chat.

 He’s less enthused when he gets to the last one.

 The first was in regards to the whole photo debacle, saying maybe next time. The second mentioned that he was going for a jog. And the last message – the kicker really, was a photo Charles had sent of himself, shirtless and thankfully from the waist up.

 And to think Edward had nearly sent him a post-work exhausted face selfie for the fun of it.

 He grumbles, puts his phone away, and figures he’ll deal with it when he gets home.

 It’s not that he necessarily minded the photo – he did find the guy attractive to a point, but – it had been unprompted. Unsolicited. He hadn’t asked for a photo. He hadn’t been expecting a shirtless photo. He wasn’t in the current mood to receive such a photo. He could have been at school on break and gotten this photo.

 He’s angry and annoyed by the time he gets home.

 Edward putters around and leaves Charles on read. It’s one thing going after sex and expecting these photos and it’s another to get them out of the blues. He lets his friends know of this debacle and relishes in their reactions. He’s glad someone gets it.

 Finally, after making dinner, playing a few rounds of video games, taking a shower, getting his lunch ready for the following day, and having a nice chat with his friends, he decides to answer Charles.

 “Even if a photo of a woman, man, or person shirtless may be nice to receive, it’s always better to send it with consent and with fair warning. Especially when you’re not expecting one and that with my work, there are often children nearby.”

 He doesn’t expect an answer so quickly, especially since it’s been five hours since the photo was sent, but Charles, true to form, answers. Edward laughs out loud when he reads how very sorry Charles is and how he genuinely thought Edward would appreciate it. Edward sighs again and groans, passing a hand through his hair.

 He tries to find a polite way of trying to get this man to understand and he’s only a little surprised by how easily the words come to him, “There’s a time and place for everything. You don’t send these types of photos willy-nilly whenever you feel like it. There’s context, time, mood, etc. Consent and fair-warning. Imagine you were sitting with your family, friends, or kids and you received such a photo without warning. You can’t assume that the person on the other side is in an appropriate setting to receive these types of messages and images without checking beforehand.”

 It’s at times like these he wishes men could be less – like this. He likes a good shirtless photo just like anyone else who’s into men, but he hates that this seems to be a norm. And at least this was only a shirtless photo! He doesn’t want to think of the number of times when he was having a nice conversation about literally anything unrelated to the human body, only to find himself with a photo of a man’s junk, completely unprompted.

 Sometimes, he almost wishes he were into women just to be spared this.

 Edward figures he’s given Charles enough etiquette lessons for the night and puts his phone away. He pulls up something decent to watch on television and does his best to forget about the incident for now. If anything, he reminds himself, he doesn’t need to commit to anything with this besotted Romeo.

Trish by her independent nature and tremendous Will proves those stereotypes are bullshit, not even factoring in their first meeting as already making a huge impression on his beliefs of what girls can do- Trish knowing how to challenge him by staying true to herself yet having the compassion to help someone suffering and with fewer chances from birth than she had would not only win him over but give him something even Bruno can't, self sustaining confidence, bc Trish isn't part of a chain of command, she's just a girl in love with a boy who wants him to be happy and that concept while foreign to him for so long once it kicks in he could actually learn to build himself For himself and For someone who wouldn't use him for some greater schemes or dirty work, 

I love Bruno ok he's one of the best characters in anything ever but his flaw in his ability to help motivate ppl is tied to that fact that he's bringing them into a dangerous strict order of command to Serve not entirely in a place/way that lets them just be themselves and realize organic loving relationships with anyone and themselves SO

That all being said, Everything Trish does he's paying attention to, she keeps him alive during the Grateful Dead fight not because she needs him to serve for a cause ( a cause might I add even Bruno the near saint he is was ready to let Nara go right then and there for bc death is in the job description) but because she doesn't know him well yet and shit he even swung a knife at her when they first met over who was in the bathroom, but he's a person suffering and in pain and to let him die even if it's Expected Of The Mission is garbage to her even if she respects Bruno down the line as a father compared to fucking evil Diavolo,

 Trish constantly goes out her way to do these things for Nara bc Trish instinctively knows he's the most vulnerable mentally and her sense of compassion and justice (likely something Donatella made sure to instill in her before her death by cherishing Trish and spoiling her even as a single mother) will not stand to not help someone when she could've- and he reciprocates it even if in disbelief bc he can tell This Person Is Safety, This Person Is Like Me Yet Not, A Better Me I Want To Be, by the time he's about to die someone with his fragile mind was actually gaining conviction about taking control for himself on his own terms and he would risk even those chances to defend the person who actually helped him arrive there (along with Gio) in the first place, 

I think by the end of his life he rly did love her or start to, it being romantic or not is up to individual interpretation to which you know I'm in the romance camp, point is he found someone who truly taught him strength without him fully realizing it and did so without belittling him, if anything instead treating him only with love and kindness and patience (not being a door mat for him, but like, not treating him like ass like everyone else has their moments of either), I think anything Trish asks of him, this is all why he's so willing to do it on top of feeling deep  empathy, I've written in my character notes as well that like this goes even further to sex being one of the most intimate things there is, like I kno we jest and jape abt Teens Doing Dumb Shit bc we're clowns 

but the sheer vulnerability you have to have esp in a first love situation to be willing to go through with that for the first time ever takes a lot of trust and courage, aspects I think Trish was able to give him and would solidify in asking something seen as so important for many people from him, the headstrong Trish wants to be vulnerable for him and the slowly confidence boosted Narancia wants to accept that faith and trust and love and exchange it with his own of the same for her, it's not horny teens 100% it's two hurt but hopeful kids on the verge of having to be adults wanting to find another piece of identity in how they are with someone else, obvs it will forever be offscreen bc pedos deserve to be skinned alive 

I just feel that the components that would fuel them to do something teens try to do to feel more adult and bc hormones are a lot more based in growing maturity than pure lust, I think this is what I fully mean by Writing About Teens Exploring Love And Sexuality; Not Fetishizing And Reveling In Showing The Act Itself Especially For Disgusting Titillation, I think this and not explicitly writing the sex are the difference between child porn and creating realistic characters

Yeah, it is going to sound like a dumb take but the topic of sex and sexuality itself is not inherently sexual, by which I meant it isn’t the focus — there’s SO much more to it and in this case especially it can be like the ultimate sign of love, trust, intimacy, compassion, trying to make your way as a teen through a harsh world, like I can go on. Nasties Dont Interact but the shying away from the mere mention of it in a non-sexualized context is unrealistic. 

 Yes The Grateful Dead fight i 1000% agree is so important in both his personal growth and the development of their relationship, I think it’s an important parallel that he is dumbfounded about her going to such lengths to keep him alive without the sense of duty/obligation versus Trish’s feelings and outbursts of confusion on why Bucciarati and his gang even cared about her, protecting her to the point of death being on the line.(edited)

all these elements of complication and similarities between their characters is why ive gotten so passionate about both them and their relationship (whether romantic or platonic it’s really fucking strong and good), the story of two kids making it through adversity, learning to unshoulder their burdens and lean on others, the Found Family™️, and learning and growing together is just so much more fucking deep and complex than the mainstream bs that exists. 

now im not any type of elitist hipster but esp in male and female relationships portrayed in what feels like basically fucking everything are just like CompHet Bullshit and they’re together bc They Are Just Supposed To Be (not to mention the toxic masculinity culture within that where the women barely have character arcs and are just seen as objects anyways) But what I’m trying to say is that in this the relationship is real and it feels earned in a way that just isn’t there in so much other media out there(edited)

BDRP Questionnaire 2019

Posting this on Charlie since I actually talked about him quite a bit! Let’s gooooo

Characters: Berlioz, Hades, Kiara, Nala, Andrina, Merida, Charlie, Apollo, John, Su, Ashleigh, Nemo, Jun

Pick one of your characters and talk about their growth (we recommend choosing an older character, but it’s up to you!) What about their story has surprised you? What are you proud of? How have they changed from their original inception to now?

This one goes out to Charlie. I pitched Charlie very deceptively-- claiming he was a prophet, aligning him, at first, with Calliope, making it look like Charlie’s magic was of the classical, Cassandra-inspired kind. But all along, I knew that what I wanted Charlie to be was more of this sci-fi/fantasy blend as an homage to his movie’s sci-fi bend too. This year, I got to actually reveal that Charlie is a time traveler after two years!! This is very exciting for me! I’ve enjoyed being able to lean into Charlie’s new image systems with this reveal, even though I’m out of my depth and breaking like 67 different time travel rules, probably lol. Still, it’s been great to take him to that place, and to invent Future-Charlie as both a deux ex machina and an expression of identity/choice/free will etc etc. I did not have Future-Charlie in mind when I created Charlie, so that was something I was proud of coming up with!

Pick another character and talk a little about where you WANT them to go. What are your plans for them going into the new year?

I’m going to talk about Nemo if only because everyone else feels like a spoiler lol. Nemo, as a relatively new character though, is still full-speed-ahead on his initial goals that I outlined for him in his application. Now that Nemo’s been established in the school and he has this little group of buddies, I want:

To focus on his wing. I want Nemo to push himself, get himself in a spot of trouble, potentially injure himself.

Reveal his wings to at least one mundus friend

Continuing to infuse his posts with body image issues. This is a slow build kind of plot that really is like...the broth of Nemo’s plot-soup, lol, while training for his placement is the chicken and belonging at school is the noodles….it needs to be this throughline more than like, para a, para b, para c. at least for now.

Pick a thread or a plot that you’re proud of and talk about why you loved it.

I could pick a lot of threads here lol it’s honestly so HARD. But I think I want to shout-out to the Charlie/Jim first kiss thread because it surprised even me and Hannah. We initially planned for the first kiss to be just that-- one kiss, then we done, Jim and Charlie go on to be friends. But like in the best of cases, Jim and Charlie’s palpable chemistry actually informed more of Charlie’s arc and opened up avenues previously closed to me/Charlie since Charlie had been so SHUT to the idea of love. So! I really loved that thread. Also because like, I literally made Charlie experience the big bang after his first kiss. And THAT’S the BEST way to use magic in my opinion. Like when you can infuse magic with an emotional catharsis-- I think the other time I did that super well was similar actually, when Herc kissed Kiki’s cheek and she grew a tree in his room lol. So yeah! Some of my best writing in that thread, amazing chemistry, big surprises. It was an absolute pleasure.

In terms of your own writing, identify 1-3 strengths and talk about why you think it’s one of your strengths.

-Image systems. I dragged myself for this, but I think it’s something that really helps me find a character’s voice and make myself excited to RP them! Also, I think it’s what people like about my writing sometimes. Maybe. IDK, lol. -Complex Emotion: I’m stealing this from my mentor who said I’m good at creating complex emotion and so you know its true. My most introverted characters get the bulk of this naturally--they are introspective and feely and give themselves the space to think and feel. But I really want to try to inject more into my extroverted characters. I think I’m doing well for Nemo, who had undiagnosed anxiety and so that informs a lot of his personality in very interesting-- very OPPOSITE-- ways as Berlioz; Nemo struggles with being alone because ‘alone’ means he gets too in his head. That’s been really fun for me and why he’s quickly become one of my fave voices to write (I know, u all thought it was because I am in love with Jimin (true), but no its bc Nemo is an anxious, big feeling baby and he’s always so Alive to me, plus i was made to write a fairy it was always my destiny.)

In terms of your own writing, identify 1-3 areas of improvement.

-Dialogue: PERSONALLY I feel like I’m not great at dialogue. Some posts are better than others and I think I’m good at like…..texting dialogue? IDK. I feel like I struggle in paras though to craft good dialogue. It’s just, rn, average dialogue. Of course not every post needs to have hilarious, punchy, great dialogue. But do my characters sound different? Am I doing all I can to create rhythm and speech patterns? -Filtering: Im being very picky rn, because actually I don’t do this too much, but I do it enough where I’m like, I gotta go read some really stellar writers adn ban myself from using “Feel” and “think” for like a whole month. What I’m talkinga bout is like: Ber realized/ Ber thought / Ber knew. That kind of writing is totally fine, but that’s about it. I need to come up with more creative ways to talk about feelings and abstract concepts!!!

-Character: I know everyone is probably like………….how dare lauryl put this here. But listen. I don’t think I struggle with character on RP. But outside of RP? Oh boy! The THING about RP is you MUST create a character, that’s your vessel for writing here, and so you do all that development plus u got the four years of worldbuilding informing that character, and literally EVERYTHING CHARACTER DRIVEN ITS...THERE IS NO OTHER WAY.  Outside of RP though I think I have struggled because my natural affinity is worldbuilding and shit like that. I’m type 5 baby, I am attracted to characters who let me poke at things I don’t know anything about, like even Jun, part of it really is like, petitions and grocery store management lmfadsofij. SOOOo idk I just need to be able to focus on crafting characters that are compelling vessels for the cool shit I like to do outside of RP.

Pick one of your plots, or even just a character, and come up with a list of 3-5 “mentor texts” where you can look for inspiration or research, then write a short (2-4 sentences) why you picked those texts. JOHN DARLING BREAKS INTO FAERYLAND 1. Call Down the Hawk/Raven Cycle: It’s no coincidence that my reread of Raven Cycle last winter played a pretty big part in inspiring this new version of John. The descriptions of the magical forest Cabeswater and the hunt for Glendower have the same kind of contemporary fantasy vibe that I really like for John. And of course, Ronan’s dream magic is very much intertwined with the faery realm feeling like a dream (and Ashleigh, obviously, as a dark faery who can manipulate them). More than that though, the attention paid to the psyches of each character and how they drive the plot forward is just… /chefs kiss. 2. The Mabinogian: I want to draw from these classic Welsh/British stories and incorporate them in creative ways! Or just as, like, motifs are something. :) I have tried to do this but would like to be a lot more intentional, instead of just being like lmao let me look up some random shit for this one reply~ 3. The Hazel Wood: This book deals with characters coming into the real world from a book world! This kind of goes along with the Mabinogian as I kind of ish want to do something similar, only treating the Mabinogian as a historical, cultural text as opposed to a fiction. This book also focuses a lot on fairy tale tropes (like numbers) which I really want to incorporate in John’s stuff. I want to ideally write some of my own fairy tales-- I have one in mind actually through Ashleigh but it’s related to John too since he’d the scholar of said stories.  

And now, a wishlist!

-Exploring Nemo’s disability. This is slightly challenging for me since we don’t have many fairies, but I’m brainstorming some ideas and hope to really kick it off in January, leading up to his Talent Placement Test.   -I really want to have a lot of town-centric plots for Jun. Would love to rp with the police officers! I want to have Jun try to get some ppl arrested tbh ahah, like, Fflew for loitering, or maybe reporting Mitte. I would love some arch nemeses tbh-- Mitte does seem like a good one. AND I want to submit at least three petitions next semester!! Maybe i should make that two!! Still!! -Do some Bonfamille plots. I already have something I’m really excited about and have already planned here so this is a teaser… -Keep writing essays. The fairies have been great, getting me really inspired to do these.What’s been an amazing mental exercise, and why I cannot stop writing these, is thinking about how the political philosophy of Pixie Hollow informs how it functions: technically, socioculturally etc. It’s really fun for me to basically build a communist thought project and then enact it for real. I feel like I’m learning a lot about...well, societies, lol, and how the material factors endlessly bleed into, and shape, ideas and beliefs (and vice versa). Also, I literally have to do these because when Nemo is IN the Hollow and I want to write him getting a glass of water, I’m faced with a lot of technical questions: do fairies have running water? Does he have to get it from a stream? How do they keep things cool? Etc etc. And that’s why I go off on these, and I’m excited to keep doing them, as many as I can, with feedback from my fellow fairies. Also, do want to do ones that are NOT fairy related, so we’ll see about that. -Write John backstory. He’s gone on a few other adventures and I’d like to actually one-shot those maybe lol. -Alternate Charlie Timeline: This is something that’s bopping around in my head and I haven’t found the perfect way to make it happen, but I want Charlie to travel to an alternate version of his life and get stuck. When I figure out the right way to do this, my partners will also get to rp alternate versions of their characters lol. That’s fun right!! Of course it is, we do it all the time with AUs, but this one obvi be more personal and more closely tied to canon.

OPTIONAL: Why do you RP? First and foremost, I RP because it’s writing for the sake of writing-- joy for joy. I think this is even more important this year as I’ve had to focus on mentorship writing outside of RP. RP became the place where I didn’t have to think so hard about making everything make sense, lol. It gave my brain a break so I could be less judgmental of myself and just have fun and do the most ridiculous stuff...and some of my fave stuff iS ridiculous because of that...like Nemo and Sindri making flower crowns or the ASC nonsense. It’s this kind of light, fluffy, low-stake (but still High Stake) stuff that provided me endless joy when I needed it the most. Second of all, I RP because I really want to invest in people’s creative energy. I think doing so gives back to myself. Building canon, helping people brainstorm, seeing people grow-- I feel like a proud mom when I get to have this kind of mentorship role myself. I talked to MK about this, but even though Sam left to go off and do greater things, that’s like-- to me, it was a lot like he was graduating from this weird BDRP school I’ve helped create. I felt nothing but pride and happiness for him and really felt like, if BDRP was to explode tomorrow, I ACHIEVED the thing I set out to do when, four years ago, I sat on my computer and drafted BDRP’s mission and vision and committed myself to this admin role. And THAT’S what I want ideally-- for BDRP to be this collaborative place that doesn’t focus too much on what makes sense, on sitewide plots that force people into roles. I have always wanted plots like ASC and John’s search for Excalibur to be able to exist side by side, and I think we’ve done that. Now we just have to tend this garden, don’t we, haha? May BDRP bear many delicious fruit.

Hey so like on the shiro/keith clip we see how keith tries to convince shiro to give Black another go but shiro flinches & cuts keith off about it & i totally know this is him burying his insecurities under the rug. Since you’re someone who’s had experiences with ppl under similar struggles as shiro i wanted to ask, what does it take for them to finally open up about it? They don’t HAVE to experience a meltdown, or do they? I’m scared for shiro & just wanna picture how he can begin healing

And it really depends on the person and the situation, I dun think a meltdown is necessary, but I think you kinda feel like this is where Shiro is going haha, because you can see that he’s not really ok, but he keeps putting more and more on himself ignoring that the foundation he builds it all on is not really stable. So it just feels like it’s a matter of time until it all comes crushing down on him.

It would be awesome if he voluntarily talks about it with someone.. but does anyone see that happening?

I dunno, in my personal experience at least, the guys who kinda try to “push” their way through the trauma and go on as if nothing changed, usually end up messing up something so bad at some point, they can no longer deny that whatever happened really affected them. Like I think it usually required something really extreme for them to admit “ok maybe I’m not fine”. (not like it helps, most of the time they will still continue running away from it all in any way they can think of, maybe even more that before, you dun exactly “heal” from PTSD, you just have to learn to live with it in a healthy way..)

With Shiro tho it’s kinda difficult to say what of his behavior is a psychological thing because his mental state is finally catching up to him, or if he’s just under the influence of something. Because the Galra had done something to him and his brain and he had alot of purple quintessence exposure.

And because we dunno much about his past, it’s also kinda hard to say where exactly alot of the things come from.

Also not sure how far they gonna go into the whole PTSD thing.. Sven always had that theme kinda, so I hope they do keep it and expand it even more. Because I LOVED Sven’s breakdown in DOTU, one of my fav scenes, and I really want them to do that with Shiro.

I want them to show Shiro being weak and broken and for him to understand that It’s ok to feel like that sometimes.

Cuz like see, right now what they mostly show is how strong Shiro is, and how he’s always in control of everything, and how he’s this perfect leader and can overcome anything and is always there for his team. You know.. he’s the “space dad”.

And this is kinda exactly the image you alot of time struggle to break for soldiers with PTSD that are sure that this is the way they have to be.

Like the show doesn’t really makes his struggle really explicit so far. It’s hinted at, but it doesn’t seem like a big deal, so I dunno, to me atleast it makes it seem like it’s kinda easy to do what everyone thinks Shiro is doing. Kinda like “oh bad flashback! nm lets just act as usual after that”

I think that doesn’t exactly paints the most perfect picture of what it’s like living with PTSD. Maybe even does the opposite, because that’s exactly what alot of guys with PTSD inspire to be like, exactly like what Shiro is trying to project, only not many actually manage to really do that.

Because realistically that’s not how it usually works. realistically most of the time they just end up feeling shitty for always feeling like they are failing to live up to that “perfect soldier” example. because they are constantly scared, they feel lost, they don’t believe in themselves, feel powerless, insecure, broken, hopeless. but because they have this “I need to be strong, I gotta be a good soldier, I gotta be there for my team” hammered into their brain, they just try to ignore all those feelings and bury them deep inside. And they don’t get help and end up in very bad places.

Like, Shiro once said something like  “you can’t focus on what went wrong , you gotta think how to make things right” and you see this is kinda how he usually operates.

Which is definitely the right idea! only I think very few people (specially very empathetic people like Shiro) can do that so easily after going through something really traumatic. In most cases all those things that went wrong that they try not to focus on and ignore, catch up to them. flashbacks, nightmares, triggers. you really can’t run away from it no matter how much you try, you gotta like face the thing head on, fully accept it, and only from there fight to make it into a better place.

And Shiro is definitely trying to run away from what happened to him. like “nope can't focus on that” but like he’s gotta focus on that for a bit, because it will never stop chasing him and will just try to get in his way more and more.

So I dunno, I want them to first show Shiro making bad mistakes because of his PTSD, and ruining relationships, and for them to show Shiro being weak, Shiro not knowing what do, Shiro crying, Shiro letting people help him instead of always trying to help other people. And then show him as a great leader. 

Because without that part, I think many people will just see this perfect “space dad” , someone who looks really strong and isn’t that affected by what happened to him or that he very easily gets over it and pulls himself together for the greater cause or something. And I feel like most soldiers with PTSD really want to be that guy, but again, it rarely actually works like that… 

So I dunno, I might have a very different perspective on this whole thing, but like I hope that if they do go for PTSD there with Shiro, that they would REALLY go there. Because I think Shiro failing and Shiro being broken and Shiro getting help is an important thing to show before they try to establish him as a great leader. (and I dun feel like the stuff we have seen so far is enough)

But anyway, because this is a kid show with happy ends for everyone, it all has to work out for the best, so nothing to worry about, it probably won’t end for Shiro how alot of times it sadly ends for soldiers with PTSD

(Also making people with PTSD open up about it is a hard task, most of the time you get flushed like Sendak if you ever try to imply something might be wrong with them haha, I can understand why Keith kinda always treads around it there)

We aren't gonna win this challenge, because there is always gonna be that one tribe member who has the advantage with selfies that are high self-esteemed against others who cant do selfies and has to actually wait for a task that cant do with selfies or the tribe name and all that, unless you want to carry a 16 by 16 large whiteboard with erasable expo marker onto it and try to find the item. Might as well forfeit since we can't win.

Me leaving that challenge straight away makes me less threatening and I am trying to play UTR pre-merge. I wasn't that active in socializing right now, and there is no flash games so far. If I can keep up this UTR strategy while also working with a few people I can dominate this. I mean leaving the chat either has its moments. Sometimes good things can happen with people leaving, or nothing happens. Whether leaving or not gives me a clue or not at least I can say that I am not a threat at all right now. But the decision to leave was strategic and also helpful since I can't do selfies in time and I know there would be "sacrificial" points and knowing me, I would sacrifice points for advantages or clues to idols. But for me personally I think this was the right move.

Well hello! My name is Kelsey Mikaelson, hailing from the Koh Sai state and I didn't die; I have crystallized and now I'm a Glamazon ready for the runway~! I can not tell you, being back here means...the WORLD to me. The premise of this season of Heroes vs Villains and the judges got it right, I am a heroine. But this season for me is about redemption. In Koh Sai, I really felt like a contender, I felt like I could win. Leaving was really tragic for me and this time around, I'm considering this my redemption. I realllllly want to do well, like, I can not TELL you how badly I want to finish what I started in Koh Sai. SO when we lost the first immunity challenge, my LIFE flashed before my eyes. And when I went a whole day without logging on to Skype, #ThatPart, I remember just mentally kicking myself the rest of the day and if it had been me that was eliminated...first? ...I don't even want to go there. I know that if it had been up to us to choose who leaves, Adil's name is the only I've heard. However, I don't want to see Adil leave early in the competition as he lives across the world and I'm usually alive quite late so we can chat about life and things like that. As for the rest of the tribe, I'm happy to see most of them. I quite wish there were less people from my season around...I love them but I don't feel like they're looking out for me, you know? I think the people that I'm meeting for the first time are all more invested in getting to know me. You know what it is, I think the people from my season automatically assume I'm with them. Quill herself asked me who I wanted to vote out for the last tribal and said she'd talk to me later. It's been three days and...where she at? NOT with me, I can tell you that much. The good news is that most everyone has got a niche with me however, something we've bonded over. Jay and I both love Kelly Clarkson, Bryce, Chips and I love RPDR, Christian and I are Connor and Oliver...so I don't feel unsocial which some people say I am. WHAT-ever. I think this immunity is really handy and I definitely appreciate it. I just...I reeeealllly want to do well. In just ONE of these, I want to just do well! And I've never felt closer to snatching the crown than in Koh Sai. So you know what? I deserve to snatch it again! So we won immunity wooo! my losing curse is over! Of course we only won, because the villains are villains and someone on that tribe gave us the win for an advantage lol. If I had to guess who took it I would say either zach or trixie lol. I'm just happy I don't have to worry about tribal again! Although I will say our last target, Adil, has been talking a lot more and being more active, which is great, because the reason he was being targeted was because people thought he was semi-inactive. My issue is that its kinda fishy that he's suddenly active, like maybe its just a coincidence, but I can't help but be paranoid and believe that someone warned him that he was the target and that his lack of vocalness was the reason why, and if that is the case then my name could have very well been thrown under the bus. I'm really sad to see that Ian quit the game too, I hope he's doing alright and I wish him the best. I also think I was on the right path to finding the idol, but now I'm curious. I placed a rock into a formation of other stones and something happened, but I don't know what I changed, or where the change took place. I'm thinking my best bet is to retry where I last searched and hopefully something is there. If not its back to square one.

I'm like... WHAT?! Did I get sucked into some weird time loop and suddenly miss out on a whole hour? Did I do something wrong? I realize that it is in large part my fault because I make a habit out of filling out the list of stuffs with pictures that others can't just by being creative or crafty or whatever in my community... and I dropped the ball. Soooo of course I am aware that I will probably be getting the boot and decide to search for the idol, but I'm a #mood or however I'm going to qualify it.. perhaps #funk is better. Hm... and so I decide to not take the hosts options seriously and get myself stranded without climbing equipment ( though arguably I would try climbing and probably break my neck if this weren't in a world with preexisting and written prompts). https://s-i.huffpost.com/gadgets/slideshows/279239/slide_279239_2071948_free.gif Then I talk to some of my tribemates about the vote and apologize for being utterly and completely useless. They tell me that it's not big deal and that our tribe actually has a number of people who are existing as dead weight. This makes me feel better about myself because at least they're willing to lie to me about me having more value than others if it's not true. And so they want to target Adil? I think that's his name. Anyway, I'm cool with it because he should be first boot anyway since he chose Ryan from the current season of Survivor as his avatar and that's a huge misstep in someone that I may have or could have ended up allying with. But then, nope! No tribal council! Ian's making the most of his life and withdrew from the game because he didn't want it to take a toll on himself in a negative fashion. The one that keeps me awake at night thinking about what I could have done differently. The one that brings me to tears... it's the one where you have to complete tasks in order to earn points and the tribe with the most earned points gets freedom from tribal council. I know the trick to this challenge! I know that you just don't do anything and let the other tribe waste their time. Honestly, let them suffer. And then of course that happened to those over at the villain tribe... and so they have tribal council and our tribe lives another day!! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In summation, I'm still a useless lump of clay to be molded by my fellow players on the hero tribe. I have no alliances. I have no one I trust or am voting with. And I'm not even sure if I was being fed a line of bull poo in the last round about whether they were going to bump me off.
